Talking to a child about serious illness

Children thrive on communication and it is important for parents to be able to be open with their children about what is happening in their family, but it can be hard to know where to start and what information it is appropriate to share. We can help you prepare for conversations with supported children and their siblings about difficult and sensitive topics, such as serious illness, death and dying. We will learn about your child and use our expertise to guide you in making decisions that feel right for your family.

What does it involve?

Families can be allocated a therapist to help empower them to have conversations with their children about serious illness, death and dying.  Your therapist will take time to get to know you so that they can help prepare you for difficult conversations.  It might become appropriate for this to be explored further in therapy sessions, or it may be enough for a therapist to work with parents around their communications with their child or children.  Our interventions are designed to be flexible so that we can support you in a way that is right for your family.
