Team Shooting Star shine at the Surrey Half Marathon

March 20, 2025

We were thrilled that Shooting Star Children’s Hospices was the charity partner for this year’s Surrey Half Marathon, 5k, and 2k’s race. The event, organised by Run Through, was a huge success and an unforgettable day for all involved. The atmosphere was filled with energy and camaraderie as we proudly saw Shooting Star flags and banners displayed across the event village.

With over 60 runners participating for Shooting Star across the three different race distances – our team was made up of a mix of volunteers, staff, long-term supporters, first-time participants, corporate teams, and those running in memory of loved ones. The spirit of the day was exceptional, with everyone coming together for a fantastic cause.

A special mention goes to our corporate partners, Bourne Estate Agents, who participated in the 5k race. It was heart-warming to see their team take part and show their support. Additionally, over 25 runners from our London Marathon team joined us, using the event as a part of their training for the big day. The sense of community within the team was palpable, and it was a wonderful opportunity for our supporters to meet each other.

Although the weather was on the chilly side, spirits were high, and smiles were abundant as our runners made their way around the course. Many of our supporters remarked on the sight of so many Shooting Star t-shirts and running vests throughout the event village, creating a powerful visual reminder of the impact we are making together.

The race took runners on a scenic single loop, starting from Woking Leisure Centre and winding through the picturesque countryside. We were fortunate to have a fantastic team of volunteers who helped us make the event run smoothly. A huge thank you goes to Tricia, Bob, Kim, Vanessa, and Kate who cheered on the runners, captured photos and assisted with handing out neck buffs and flyers to finishers. Synergy Physio also played a key role by offering massages in exchange for donations to Shooting Star.

The day was filled with touching moments, and we were fortunate to receive feedback from some of the participants:

Chris Sewell from the Bourne Estate Agents team summed up their experience, saying, “It was good fun, and we already have staff asking when the next event is, so hopefully we can get an even bigger team together for the next one!”

Aimee Shields, mother of Libby and Thomas, who also took part in the 2k run, said, “Thank you so much for all your support yesterday and leading up to the run. It was a fantastic day and we’re all very proud of the kids. I’m really glad we were able to support the hospice.”

Jenny Tullett, who ran the 5k alongside her children, Jenson and Riley, in memory of one of their best friends Harrison, shared, “The boys loved the experience with their friends, as did I, and we were so pleased Mike and Carina (Harrison’s parents) were there to support us in memory of him. As difficult as it would have been for them, the children and I loved doing something positive that we could all be included in! It gave us a day to dedicate to him, smile, relive some old memories, and make some new ones. Harrison’s motto was ‘try everything,’ so what greater honour than to raise money trying something we’ve never done before!”

The event raised an incredible £17,811 (including Gift Aid), with more donations still to come! Thank you all for being part of this unforgettable day, and for helping us raise vital funds for Shooting Star.
