A look inside Splashers

Typically, taking your baby swimming is a rite of passage for many new parents, but for some of the children under our care, this opportunity is not so straightforward.
Many of the children we support require warm water, making other pools, such as in leisure centres, unsuitable. In September 2023, we launched a specialised hydrotherapy group, Splashers, for babies and children with complex needs. We created an environment tailored to their needs in our hydrotherapy pool – warm water, specialised support and a judgment-free space.
These sessions are designed to empower parents and carers to feel more confident in the water with their children, particularly when they have conditions that impact movement. Additionally, the group encourages peer support, helping parents and carers connect with others facing similar challenges.
The monthly group has a different theme each session, for example dinosaurs, the weather and Alice in Wonderland. The group encourages children to explore their surroundings, interact with each other, take part in a sensory story and have fun in the water.
In 2024, we refined the Splashers programme, dividing it into two age groups, Tadpoles (one- to-two years olds) and Ducklings (pre-schoolers).
Ginny Hancock, Physiotherapist at Shooting Star shared, “Splashers has become more than just swim sessions – it’s now a supportive community for both children and parents.”
We’re hoping to expand and invite more families to join, so if you think your child could benefit, please get in touch via hydrotherapy@shootingstar.org.uk
We’re excited to continue making a splash!
